Open Course – #3
PAR 3 | HCP 4
- Black: 132 yards
- Gold: 125 yards
- Silver: 115 yards
- Green: 86 yards
Details: This short, but intimidating Par 3 was inspired by the 17th hole at the Stadium Course of the TPC at Sawgrass, located in Ponte Vedra, Florida. As the sight of the 71st hole every year at The Players Championship, this hole is made even more difficult as pressure is coupled with the demand to land a ball on a tiny island green. In 1984, 64 balls went into the water surrounding the green, and the scoring average for the day soared to 3.79, the highest average recorded for a Par 3 on the PGA TOUR.
History: The TPC at Sawgrass, owned and operated by the PGA Tour, was designed by Pete Dye to accommodate spectators and challenge the pros. The course was routed so that play returns to (or near) the clubhouse several times. At the first tee and 18th green, spectators can watch from a terraced, earthen amphitheater 40 feet high and sheltered on three sides. The amphitheater can accommodate an audience of 20,000.
