The Open Course #2 is inspired by Pinehurst (No. 2) #16 Par 5.
Inspiration: The inspiration for this par 5 was from the 16th hole at the famed Pinehurst No. 2 in Pinehurst, North Carolina.
Details: On a direct line, the tee shot on Pinehurst No. 2’s 16th hole calls for a long carry over the pond (making #16 the only hole on the course with water). The experienced golfer, however, should have no trouble clearing both the water and the bunker to the left of the fairway.
History: In the 1974 World Open, Johnny Miller hit what he calls his “best shot under pressure” on #16, a 3-wood second shot to 8 feet of the hole. Miller then two-putted for birdie to win the title in a playoff with Jack Nicklaus and Frank Beard. As a par 4 in the 1999 U.S. Open, the hole was reaching in regulation by less than half the field.
